Even an inventry cleaning script will not work,, because . . .
Player " A " takes 50 of the same item to merchant " B " who deos not sell the item
Merchant " B " has to create space for 50 of the said items thus causing lag
the inventry cleaning script fires after the dialogue box closes and cleans the merchant
Player " C " walks in with another 40 of the said item,, and Bingo,, back to square one
So . . .
The build team needs to look at the custom items that are dropped on a regular basis. ( i would begin around Zaradene with those pesky goblins ) and place one of each loot item in to the inventry of each merchant in the town. Do this and the lag will stop.
The reason i say custom items is because changing / creating the name causes the server to look for something that is not generic
example Medium Quality Short Sword is a custom name
short sword + 2 is the generic name.
