Dragonarmies of Ansalon

During the War of the Lance, the Dragonarmies were split into five great armies, representing each of the chromatic wyrms of Takhisis. Presiding over each of the armies was a Dragon Highlord, who oversaw all the military operations and command. The Highlords were only subservient to Ariakas (who was chief of the Highlords) and to Takhisis herself.

The Highlords were Dragonarmy officers who had risen through the ranks by whatever means necessary. Amongst their number were clerics, wizards, warriors and rogues. The Highlords were the generals of the armies and were served directly by the Highmasters, who were their lieutenants and aides.

At any one time, there were only five Dragon Highlords.

The Dragonarmies were the collective five armies of Takhisis, that were raised during the Age of Despair and launched their offensive across Ansalon, to conquer the land in the name of the Dark Queen. The five armies were filled with Chromatic Dragons, Draconians, Goblins, Hobgoblins, Humans, kobolds, Minotaurs, Ogres, and all manner of other evil humanoids. Each of the armies was led by a powerful Dragon Highlord, who was aided by one or more Dragon Highmasters.

There was an army for each of the chromatic dragon types: red, green, white, blue and black. The dragonarmies were led by the warlord Duulket Ariakas, who ultimately served Takhisis. The dragonarmies were undone as a major force during the War of the Lance, and the remnant forces were chased down and destroyed over the next few years.

Red Dragonarmy

The Red Dragonarmy led all the major offensives during the War of the Lance, becoming a vast instrument of death and oppression that Ariakas used to spearhead his advances throughout Ansalon. Whilst the army was first raised and brought together by Ariakas, he later handed over control to one of his Dragon Highlords. A host of Dragon Highmasters and one or two Fewmasters supported the reigning Highlord. The Red Wing was comprised of a number of red dragons, although the mightiest red wyrms tended to serve the Dark Queen directly, and did not work in the Red Wing. The soldiers in the employ of the Red Dragonarmy were the highest paid of all those in the Dragonarmies and the best equipped.

Black Dragonarmy

The role of the Black Dragonarmy was to provide support to the other armies, as well as to serve as the occupying force for already conquered lands. It was led by a singular Dragon Highlord, who was aided by a number of Dragon Highmasters. A large number of Black Dragons served in the Black Wing. The Black Dragonarmy was founded by Highlord Maldeev in 332 AC, who at the time had been serving in the newly founded Blue Dragonarmy. Maldeev along with his chosen black dragon Jahet, begun to recruit troops and black dragons and based their forces around Salimsha Tower on the border between Kern and Khur. However the Highlord was slain by one of his own black dragons, a fearsome dragon known as Khisanth, who was later punished for her deed. In 345 AC, Maldeev was succeeded by Lucien of Takar, who resumed the training and development of the Black Dragonarmy until they were prepared for war in 348 AC.

Green Dragonarmy

The Green Wing led numerous assaults throughout the War of the Lance, as well as provided key support for the Blue Wing and Red Wing. The Green Dragonarmy was run by a single Dragon Highlord, who was in turn aided by a number of Dragon Highmasters. A large number of Green Dragons made up the Green Wing, and whilst the dragons were scornful of many of their humanoid allies, all were deeply respectful of Highlord Salah-Khan. The Green Dragonarmy was formed in the foundation period of the Dragonarmies, between 332 AC - 340 AC. Throughout this time until 348 AC, the Green Dragonarmy was led by a little known Highlord and trained in all manner of combat, in preparation for war. The Highlord's name was lost to time, due to his ineffectiveness in the early days of the war, and his quick replacement.

Blue Dragonarmy

During the War of the Lance, the Blue Dragonarmy led many of the major offensives alongside the Red Dragonarmy. The army was feared by its enemies and quickly became known for the ruthless efficiency with which it won its victories on the field of battle. The army was founded by Ariakas and control was handed over to a singular Dragon Highlord. The Blue Wing was made up of a small host of Blue Dragons, who were all powerful and the most efficient and trustworthy of any of the dragons in the Dragonarmies. All the dragons honored both the blue dragon Skie and Highlord Kitiara Uth Matar, viewing them as one individual.

White Dragonarmy

The White Dragonarmy was the smallest of the five armies of Takhisis, and it's primary role in the War of the Lance, was to provide support for the other forces. Like the other armies, only one Dragon Highlord led it, who was then served by a number of Dragon Highmasters. A small cadre of White Dragons made up the White Wing. The White Dragonarmy was formed along with the other four armies during the Dragonarmy formation period in 332 AC to 340 AC. By 342 AC, it was a developed force, with a number of white dragons and large numbers of troops that fleshed out it's ranks. For the next six years, the army would train and develop their skills, until they were ready to launch the offensive with the other armies in 348 AC.
