PostSubject: Virtues   Wed Feb 27, 2008 11:04 pm

Virtues are traits that exemplify the highest standards of morality, decency and duty. They comprise the Knight's personal code. Though all Knights adhere to all of the virtues described below, the Measure is split into three sections, each Order concentrating on a particular section. Some virtues are not tied to an Order at all, but are to be of particular attention to all knights.

The Measure of the Crown: Loyalty and Obedience
Loyalty is unquestioning faithfulness to the cause of a higher power. Knights of the Crown view loyalty as a tribute to be justly and voluntarily rendered. The Order of the Crown renders loyalty to the triumverte, the kinghood, to those who, by decree of the Knightly Council, deserve the knight's protection, and to those who suffer under Evil's weight.

Obedience is the practical manifestation of Loyalty. A Knight of the Crown unquestioningly obeys those on the List of Loyalty, a list of rulers compiled by the Knightly Council who deserve the loyalty and obedience of the Knighthood.

The Measure of the Sword: Courage and Heroism
Heroism is the self-sacrificial fight for the cause of Good. Heroic deeds include strengthening the weak, enriching the poor, freeing the enslaved, exonerating the falsely accused, championing the defenseless, and aiding fellow knights in need.

Courage is the readiness to die honorably in the fight for Good. Courageous acts include facing evil fearlessly, defending the honor of the knighthood, defending the honor of a fellow knight, and protecting the defenseless and weak.

The Measure of the Rose: Honor, Justice, and Wisdom
Honor is the allegiance to one's Oath to defend the cause of Good. Honorable deeds include sacrificing oneself for the sake of others, refusing to surrender to, or ally with, an evil foe, defending the knighthood to death, protecting the lives of fellow knights, and living true to the Oath in all matters.

Justice is the heart of the Measure, and the soul of a Rose Knight: to render to everyone- creature, person, or god- his or her due. Just acts include aiding those who are less fortunate, donating all wealth to the Knightly coffers (save that which is needed for personal upkeep), worshipping and obeying Paladine and the gods of Good, fighting injustice with courage and commitment, and seeing no life is wasted or sacrificed in vain.

Wisdom is the prudent use of one's abilities and resources to uphold honor and render justice.

Courtesy
To a Knight, courtesy involves more than merely following the rules of etiquette. It's also an attitude, a way of presenting himself to the world. A
Knight carries himself proudly, maintains self-control, and accepts ill- mannered behavior with grace. He follows social customs to the best of his ability. He is polite and deferential to friends and strangers alike.

Generosity
The Knight gladly shares his meager funds and belongings with anyone in need. If he owns two swords and an elderly hunter has none, the Knight offers one as a gift. He will give his last crust of bread to a hungry child, even if he must go without food for the rest of the day. He is also generous of spirit, always willing to lend an ear to a troubled companion or acknowledge a friend's accomplishments with lavish praise.

Industry
The Knight engages in productive activity at all times. He works diligently and hard until he completes the job at hand. When not working, he studies, exercises, or practices his combat skills. He considers leisure activities, small talk, and vacations to be time-wasting folly. The Knight will not, however, work himself do death. Rest is essential for continued productivity, and with such in mind, the Knight shall take time out of each week in which to relax and rest his body and mind.

Honesty
A Knight always tells the truth as he knows it. He may decline to speak or choose to withhold information, but he will never intentionally mislead anyone, even his enemies. He may ask permission not to answer a direct question, but if pressed, he'll tell the truth (however, he may frame his answers in a way as to withhold vital information if necessary). Though a Knight doesn't make promises lightly, once he gives his word, he always keeps it.

PostSubject: Strictures   Wed Feb 27, 2008 11:05 pm

Of chief importance to a Knight of Solamnia are his strictures, a set of inviolable rules that the Knight must follow at all times.

Ethos
A Knight must maintain standing in the eyes of Paladine and the gods of Good.
This requirement means that a Knight is sworn to promote and exhibit Goodness and Order in all facets of his life. The heart of this ethos is the belief in a system of laws that promotes the welfare of all members of society, ensures their safety, and guarantees justice.

Magic
A Knight rejects the unholy magic of the mage: That which is exhibited by those of the robed orders of the Conclave, and those that said conclave calls 'Renegades'. A Knight is not to be outright cruel to such individuals, but is advised to avoid contact with such persons. Sometimes contact is unavoidable, and this should be judged on a case by case basis.

Wealth
A Knight has no interest in wealth for its own sake. He seeks spiritual rather than material satisfaction, derived from serving his faith and his Order to the best of his ability. Still, the Knight recognizes that a certain amount of money is necessary to survive. Rather than forego money altogether, he retains enough wealth to meet his worldly obligations and sustain a modest lifestyle.

PostSubject: Edicts   Wed Feb 27, 2008 11:05 pm

Edicts include commands, instructions, and traditions a Knight is pledged to obey. A Knight doesn't choose which edicts to follow; rather, he pledges to follow any and all edicts issued by the Knighthood and his patron Knight.

Religion
A Knight of Solamnia is the mortal representation of Paladine, Kiri-Jolith, and
Habbakuk. As such, a Knight acts in a way that honors the triumvirate, and all of the gods of Good. A Knight acts to defend the faith in the gods of Good, defending their values, and acting as the military branch of the church.

Patrons and Squires
Knights who have been assigned a Patron Knight owe fealty to that patron. In return, the Patron Knight owes responsibility toward to Squire. A Patron Knight may assign regular tests to measure the squire's intelligence, integrity, or skill at arms. The Squire is responsible for care of the Patron in old age. The bond between Patron and Squire never ends, and the relationship between these two is of utmost importance. This bond should never be betrayed.

Order
A Knight of Solamnia has pledged fealty to the Knighthood as a whole, and must follow the Order's edicts.

Military service
A Knight of Solamnia must perform military service when he is called upon to do so by his order.

Strongholds
A Knight of Solamnia must donate the use of his own personal property or strongholds for any legitimate purpose, as defined by the council. This includes, but is not limited to housing soldiers, entertaining government guests, storing supplies, defense or shelter of refugees, or military purposes.

PostSubject: Squires and Patrons   Wed Feb 27, 2008 11:06 pm

Among the most important elements of the Knighthood are its squires. Squires represent the future of the Order. Upon entry into the Order, any person joining begins his career as a Squire of the Crown. New Squires are assigned a Patron Knight, whose bares the responsibility of seeing that the squire is well trained. A person seeking entry into the knighthood may request a specific Patron knight, as is the case with some applicants who have already fostered close relationships with a current Knight. The ultimate decision, however, is subject to approval by the leadership of the Crown Order. This approval comes from the High Warrior, or should the position be vacant, the Grand Master. The only exception permitted, is in the absence of a High Warrior, the Grand Master may not approve his own taking of a squire. In such a circumstance, the decision rests with the knight’s council.

The Patron Knight is responsible for training their squire in all aspects of the knighthood. This includes, but is not limited to physical training, military training and tactics, instruction in the Measure, religion, law and honor. Additionally, the Patron knight bares responsibility for properly equipping, feeding, clothing and housing their squire for the duration of their charge. All training is ultimately overseen by the High Warrior. He or she is the only knight permitted to override a Patron's order, and the only knight permitted to petition a knightly council without the patron's approval.

In return for this training, and during their tenure as a squire, the squire owes ultimate fealty to their Patron. The squire will unquestioningly obey the commands of their Patron, and serve him or her with loyalty. When the patron is of the opinion that their squire has completed the required training, and furthermore is assured of the squire’s devotion, character, loyalty, and readiness to accept the responsibilities of knighthood, the patron shall petition the Knight’s Council for knighthood for his or her squire. This petition must be formally submitted in writing to the Council, and clearly state the patron knight’s endorsement of their squire for knighthood. With the exception of the High warrior, only the patron knight may petition for the knighthood of a squire. In the rare occasions when the High warrior deems it necessary to bypass the patron knight’s endorsement, a written explanation should be made to both the council and the Patron Knight.

Once the petition has been received, no further action on the petition can be taken until the High warrior’s endorsement is given in support of the petition. Petition’s made by the High Warrior on behalf of his or her own squire, or on the behalf of another squire, do not require further endorsement before the council is permitted to act upon them. Once the petition has been endorsed by the High warrior, arrangements will be made by the council to have the squire presented by their patron knight.

Upon presentation of a squire to the knight’s council, the squire is asked to surrender their blade, placing it upon a pedestal before the council. A public opportunity must then be made for any knight to pose an objection to the petition being considered. Should no objections be made, the squire will immediately proceed to their Knight’s trial, or formal evaluation by the council. In the event an objection is made, the objection will be heard and ruled upon by the council. In such a circumstance, the council may, without further discussion, deny the petition outright or recess for further deliberation. While not necessary, it is rare that in such cases that council would not hear a response by the squire before issuing a ruling.

It is not uncommon for the council to require completion of a practical test, or quest, designed to supplement the verbal testing that will occur during the squire’s knight’s trial, in preparation for knighting. To this end, it has become practice for the High Warrior to withhold his or her initial endorsement of the squire’s petition until such time as a quest has been assigned and completed.

Upon completion of a squire’s Knight’s trial, the squire will be dismissed and the Knight’s council will deliberate on the petition. All members of the council must render a vote on the petition before adjourning. The vote is to be made publicly and must be either yea or nay. Their can be no conditional acceptance. Tradition has resulted in this vote being symbolically represented by the placing of a rose upon the blade of the squire, a White Rose to symbolize a vote of yea, a black rose to symbolize a vote of nay.

PostSubject: Knighting Ceremony   Wed Feb 27, 2008 11:06 pm

All squires shall be knighted at a properly sanctified place. Tradition has generally held that these ceremonies be performed within the hallowed walls of the High Clerist Tower. The ceremony typically begins with a prayer by the High Clerist, or ranking Knight Clerist present, in which the Triumverte are called upon to bless the proceedings. The highest ranking Lord Knight present will conduct the ceremony further.

The presiding knight will then ask the patron knights present to come forward and present their squires. Each Patron Knight will state their name, introduce their squire by name, and publicly endorse their squire for knighthood. In circumstances when the High warrior has petitioned the council for a squire’s knighthood, he or she will make this traditional introduction.

The presiding knight will then ask that the squire kneels. The squire will be asked to then to draw their blade while still kneeling, but with their head up. The squire shall draw his blade and hold it in their right hand with the hilt over the heart and the blade vertical. The blade should be pointed down, with the hilt extended to the sky.

One all of the squires have been presented, the presiding knight will then state each squire’s name and ask them to affirm their intention to enter into the knighthood. After all of the affirmations have been made, the presiding knight will lead the squires in the Oath of Ennoblement, as follows:

"I do hereby pledge to honor the strictures of this sacred heritage and promise by my faith to be loyal to the holy brotherhood of Solamnic Knights. I do hereby pledge to maintain my devotion without deception or forethought. I vow to uphold the principles of loyalty, obedience, courage, heroism, justice, honor and wisdom and to solemnly and faithfully follow the edicts of the Triumvirate. I take this pledge freely, without coercion or expectation of reward, sworn in this holy place before our lords Paladine, Kiri-Jolith, and
Habbakuk, and in blessed memory of those who have given their lives to this noble cause.”

Each squire is then asked to rise as a knight of the Crown and state their oath, to which they respond with “I am (stating their name), “Est Solarus oth Mithas.”

The presiding knight then makes any final remarks and concludes the ceremony.

PostSubject: Rank and Promotion   Wed Feb 27, 2008 11:07 pm

All Knights of Solamnia typically hold two separate yet often connected ranks. The first is representative of the knight’s seniority within their respective order. The second is a military rank used for determining command on a field of battle. The Knight’s position within their order always supercedes military rank, however, since the majority of the rank and file hold the rank of Knight within their orders, a second military rank is oft needed for avoiding chaos on the field of battle or while managing a garrison.

Promotion is handled by the High Knights alone, and only within their order. No other knight is authorized to promote other knights without the express permission of their High Knight. The Grand Master may promote within any order, though common usage of this right is discouraged. Occasionally, a knight might be charged with the position of "acting" high knight or Grand Master. This is always when there is a vacancy and the order is unable to fulfill the minimum number of votes for a legal election. The acting High Knight has all of the authority of a real High Knight except that he can be overruled within his order by either both other real high knights or the Grand Master. An Acting Grand Master may not promote within any order except his own, and does not hold veto power over the High Council.

PostSubject: Rank within Order   Wed Feb 27, 2008 11:08 pm

For the purposes of determining absolute seniority across orders, The Order of the Crown is considered below the Order of the Sword, which is below the Order of the Rose. The practical affect of these varying degrees of prestige among orders is an adjustment when comparing ranks. For that reason a Knight of the Crown (Crown rank 3) is considered to be one rank below a Knight of the Sword (Sword rank 2), and two ranks below a Knight of the Rose (Rose rank 2). Similarly, a Scepter Knight (crown rank 3) is considered equal to a Blade Knight (Sword rank 2) and a Knight of the Tears (Rose Rank 2). The exception to this adjustment for comparison is made when considering the High Knights, which are considered to be equal, regardless of the different orders they represent.

Rank within the Order of the Crown
1. Squire of Crown (1st lvl)
2. Defender of Crown (2nd lvl) *on reaching this rank, a knight may petition to become a Sword Knight
3. Knight of Crown (3rd lvl)
4. Scepter Knight (4th lvl)
5. Shield Knight (5th lvl)
6. Shield of Crown (6th lvl)
7. Lord of Shields (7th lvl)
8. Lord of Crown (8th lvl)
9. Master Warrior (9th lvl)
10. Lord Warrior (10th lvl)
11. High Warrior (11th lvl) (only 1 at any time)

Rank within the Order of the Sword
1. Novice of Swords (3rd lvl) *on reaching this rank, a knight may petition to become a Rose Knight
2. Knight of Swords (4th lvl)
3. Blade Knight (5th lvl)
4. Knight Clerist (6th lvl)
5. Abbot of Swords (7th lvl)
6. Elder of Swords (8th lvl)
7. Master of Swords (9th lvl)
8. Lord of Swords (10th lvl)
9. Master Clerist (11th lvl)
10. Lord Clerist (12th lvl)
11. High Clerist (13th lvl) (only 1 at any time)

Rank within the Order of the Rose

1. Novice of Roses (4th lvl)
The Novice of Roses is a reborn Knight, who strives to acquire the wisdom necessary to recognize justice and act honorably. As an initiate on the road to enlightenment, he dresses humbly with a plain white tunic, whose only ornament is the badge, displaying a red rose: red is symbol of valor and courage, which is the starting point to acquire true knowledge of oneself and of the ways of Paladine.

2. Knight of Tears (5th lvl)

3. Knight of Mind (6th lvl)

4. Knight of Heart (7th lvl)

5. Knight of Roses (8th lvl)
The Knight of Roses is a Knight who has eventually achieved mystic elevation. In the period in which he was Novice, Knight of Tears, of Mind and of Heart, he was a venture Knight in search of glory, wisdom and enlightenment. Now he is a truly ranking member of the Order of the Rose, and can begin his true career, both in the Army and in the government of Solamnia. A Knight of Roses is part of a Rose, the basic military unit in the Army of the Rose. The insignia of his rank is a badge representing a rose surmounted by a great helm. Even if he is a cadet son, almost always he is charged with the rule of a castle or small town, as a Patrice.

6. Keeper of Roses (9th lvl)

7. Master of Roses (10th lvl)

8. Archknight (11th lvl)
The ArchKnight is a messenger and special agent of the High Justice and of the Grand Master. Often an ambassador of the Council of the Knighthood, he can be sent in special missions to any ruler of Solamnia to enforce the will of the Council, to judge especially intricate matters, or simply to notify any act of the Grand Master or of the Council. He is also a champion of the Knighthood, a glorious hero who walks Solamnia in a perpetual quest. The people bows at his passage, and the golden ring with the diamond, symbol of the ArchKnights, grants free passage all over Solamnia

9. Lord of Roses (12th lvl)

10. Master of Justice (13th lvl)

11. Lord of Justice (14th lvl)
Very often the King of one province, the Lord of Justice is a Knight of paragon for anyone living in Solamnia: a wise politician, an enlightened governor and a man of piety and of compassion, honorable and just. He embodies the ideals of wise leadership and good government, a strong arm in defense of the poor and the oppressed, and a helping hand to his people. He strives to apply the moral and political teachings of Paladine, and to live up to the greatest man which ever lived, Vinas Solamnus. The Order of the Rose is for him a strong tie to the Land of Solamnia and to the other rulers, who are by the Measure his brothers in the Order. His insignia of rank is the Golden Scale, surmounted by the seal of the Knighthood. In battle, he leads a Division, composed by 4 Quadrons Very often the Knights of his Division are originary of his Kingdom or Province.

12. High Justice (15th lvl) (only 1 at any time)
The High Justice is the supreme head of the Order of the Rose: he epitomizes the ideals of honor guided by wisdom, virtue and justice that are the basements of the Order. His power and prestige in the Knighthood and in the whole Solamnia is second only to the Grand Master. Being the head of the Knightly Order devoted to Paladine, he is also a figure of moral outstanding, and the blessing of Paladine is always with him, even if his divine powers are lesser than those hold by the holy High Clerist. He is also the Commander in Chief of the Army of the Rose, and holds supreme authority in any legal matter (concerning feudal, civil or penal rights, or the interpretation of the Measure) brought before the Council of Knights, subject only to the opinion of the Grand Master. The insignia of his rank is the golden Scale of Justice, surmounted by the Ring of High Knight, (an ancient golden ring, embedded with a star ruby with a Rose engraved on the gem) which he wears as a symbol of rulership over the Order. Ascension to this title does not mean the resignment of other political and feudal duties: should the High Justice need it, a close family member will take over the rulership of family lands as Prince Regent.

PostSubject: Military Rank   Wed Feb 27, 2008 11:08 pm

The Military rank structure of the Knights of Solamnia remains unchanged since the time of Vinas Solamnus. He laid down the ranks of the three Orders and based them loosely on the hierarchy of the Cavaliers of Ergoth, the order from which Solamnus himself came. The hierarchy of the Knighthood is unofficially divided into three groups: novitiate, those who are new to an Order; officers, those who directly command troops in battle; and lord officers, the generals and strategists of the Knighthood.

Novitiates
Novitiates are those who are generally new to an Order. A novitiate may be an experienced knight, such as one who has recently become a Rose Knight, but he is still learning his new role. A squire of the Crown is not officially considered part of the Knighthood and therefore does not hold a military rank among the Knights. Knight is the first rank held in all three Orders. Knights are the backbone of the Knighthood and the largest percentage of Solamnic Knights hold this rank.

Knight Officers

(Sergeant) Sergeant of Crowns/Swords/Roses (Company 2nd in Command)
The rank of Knight Officer is the rank at which a Knight is first placed in a leadership role. He or she is typically placed in a company as second-in-command. A Knight Officer is called a Sergeant of his or her Order.

(SubCapatian) Stewart of Crowns/Swords/Roses (Company Commander)
When a knight becomes an officer, the knight has proven been capable of leading others. A Knight's first real command is held at the rank of SubCaptain. Subcaptains are called Stewards of their Order. A steward is given command of a company, usually made up of 1 knight and 5 men-at-arms. If a Knight wishes to advance from the Order of the Crown to the Order of the Sword, or from the Order of the Sword to the Order of the Rose, it is usually done before advancing beyond Steward.

(Captain) Captian of Crowns/Swords/Roses (Regiment Commander)
Once a Knight reaches the rank of Captain, the knights has usually decided to stay in the Order the knights currently serves. A Knight who holds the rank of captain is called a Captain of their Order, and is placed in command of a regiment, which is usually 5 companies, numbering thirty men.

(Commander) Warden of Crowns/Swords/Roses (Compgroup Commander)
A Knights Commander is known as a Warden of their Order and is placed in command of a Compgroup which is made up of seven regiments, numbering 210 men.

Lord Officers

(Warrior Lord) Marshall of Crowns/Swords/Roses (Shield Commander)Once a Knight is raised in rank above Warden, the knight is a lord officer. It is at these ranks where a Knight is placed in command of thousands of Knights and leads whole armies on the field of battle. The lowest of the lord officer ranks is that of Warrior Lord. A warrior lord is called a Marshal of their Order. A marshal usually leads a shield, or five compgroups, numbering more than 1,000 men

(Lord Knight) Lord of Crowns/Swords/Roses (Quadron Commander)
A Lord Knight, called a Lord of their Order and commands a Quadron, made up of four shields, numbering more than 4,000 men. There are only a handful of Lord Knights at any one time, depending on the strength of the Knighthood.

(Lord High Knight) High Clerist/High Warror/High Justice (Order Commander)
Above the Lord Knights are the three High Knights. The High Warrior commands the Knights of the Crown, The Knights of the Sword are lead by the High Clerist, and the Rose Knights are lead by the High Justice. Each High Knight commands the army of their Order. At full strength, each army consists of 6 Quadrons, numbering 24,000 men. The Knighthood, however, has not been at full strength since before the Cataclysm.

Grand Master (commanders all three orders)
At the head of the Knighthood is the Grand Master, who personally commands the Grand Circle of Knights on Sancrist. He or she is also the supreme military commander of the Knights, leading all three armies through the High Knights.

PostSubject: Advancement   Wed Feb 27, 2008 11:10 pm

"Advancement" as opposed to "promotion" is going from one Order to the next, rather than from rank to rank. Not every knight has the goal of achieving the level of Knight of the Rose, but with advancement comes prestige, and a change in role.

For a Knight to be able to advance through the Orders of Knighthood, the Measure states that the knight must undertake a quest to prove him or herself worthy. This is known as the Quest of Virtue. During the quest, the knight must uphold the virtues espoused by the Knights of Solamnia.

When a Knight wishes to advance, they must present him or herself before a knightly council. If advancing to the Order of the Sword, the council must include at least one Lord Knight of the Sword and one Lord Knight of Crown. If advancing to the
Order of the Rose, the council must include at least one Lord Knight of the Rose and one Lord Knight of the Sword. If the council does not have the proper membership, the Knight must wait until the council contains the proper representation.

The knightly council reviews the candidate's actions during his or her time in the knighthood. If the Knight’s actions are found acceptable, the Knight is given a quest.
If the Knight feels he was misrepresented or unjustly found wanting in his actions, he may take up the matter before the council. The Knight's quest will not be given until the matter is resolved.

The quest is the final determining factor in whether the knight will be advanced. According to the Measure, the quest is a witnessed deed of heroism and valor that upholds the virtues of Knighthood. When the Knight has completed the quest, the knight returns to the knightly council with evidence that the quest has been a success. If the quest is not witnessed and there is not irrefutable evidence, the knight's advancement is denied. Advancement will also be denied if witnesses report the Knight did not act according to the virtues of knighthood. As always, the Knight has the right to answer his accusers before the Council.

The quest itself is at the discretion of the presiding council, but usually includes one major goal along with three minor goals. Minor goals are usually broad, such as uphold the Virtue of Courage, and it is left to the Knight to judge what fulfills that goal. The major goal will always involve a journey of some kind, just as Vinas Solamnus and Huma Dragonbane both traveled far in search of their quarry. At the end of this trek, there will be some challenge, such as defeating a foe in single combat, rescuing a kidnapped child, or freeing a town from the grips of a despotic ruler.

When the Knight presents his case before the Council, and all witnesses have been heard and evidence presented, the Council shall discuss, in private, the fate of the knight. If the Council returns an endorsement for the Knight’s advancement, then the Knight must only gain approval from the High Knight of the applicant’s Order and the High Knight of order the knight seeks to enter.

Should the council unanimously find that some deeds done prior to the Knight petitioning for advancement fulfill all requirements for the Quest of Virtue, the assigned quest can be waived and the Council may proceed to voting on the Knight's endorsement for entry into the new order.
